{"id":1480,"date":"2022-10-20T01:44:28","date_gmt":"2022-10-20T01:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebigbluehouse.org\/site\/?p=1480"},"modified":"2023-02-28T12:00:24","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T12:00:24","slug":"adding-dns-entries-in-pfsense","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebigbluehouse.org\/site\/adding-dns-entries-in-pfsense\/","title":{"rendered":"Adding DNS entries in PFSense"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This isn&#8217;t an advanced DNS setup, it is the usecase of my homelab; I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfsense.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PFSense<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.netgate.com\/pfsense\/en\/latest\/packages\/pfblocker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PFBlocker<\/a> for my DNS server across all VLANs. However, I also have the requirement that I like to access certain services with a Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). This is mostly to allow me to access those systems using a name rather than IP address and also gives me that wonderful &#8220;padlock symbol&#8221; where I have my certificates installed.  (I&#8217;m a big fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/letsencrypt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Let&#8217;s Encrypt<\/a> within my homelab).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This guide isn&#8217;t anything more complex than showing how I setup those custom DNS entries within my lab environment (yes it&#8217;s a little bit of a &#8216;hack&#8217; but it does the job!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Login to your PFSense management portal, select &#8220;Services&#8221; the system name<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domain: the domain for all the devices on your network, eg; home.lab<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IP Address: the IP of that host<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Description: this field isn&#8217;t mandatory, but is useful when unpicking things later!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\">\n<li>You can use the &#8220;Aditional Names for this Host&#8221; it can take a few moments to process depending on how much load there is on your PFSense.
