{"id":1478,"date":"2022-10-15T01:44:28","date_gmt":"2022-10-15T01:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thebigbluehouse.org\/site\/?p=1478"},"modified":"2023-02-05T17:03:07","modified_gmt":"2023-02-05T17:03:07","slug":"configuring-pfsense-for-unifi-dhcp-discovery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thebigbluehouse.org\/site\/configuring-pfsense-for-unifi-dhcp-discovery\/","title":{"rendered":"Configuring PFSense for UniFi DHCP Discovery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There are several ways for adopting your UniFi devices by your UniFi Controller when the software is running in a different subnet.<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\"><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true if you are running the UniFi Controller software as a docker container in bridge mode; it&#8217;ll be using a virtual network which counts as a second subnet even though it appears to be native on the server&#8217;s host IP. (This is how I have it setup).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Thought Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following methods are supported to get your devices adopted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-list\">\n<li>SSH to each device and use the &#8220;set-inform&#8221; command.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This seems a little inefficient to me &#8211; especially if you&#8217;ve got more than 1 device to onboard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need to know the IP address of the device (for example finding it in a list of DHCP leases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sample command:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"code\">set-inform http:\/\/ip.of.the.controller:8080\/inform<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Next option would be the creation of a DNS entry\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The entry would be an A record set as &#8220;unifi&#8221; and the &#8220;routable&#8221; (eg; non-docker internal) IP address of the controller<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This would be my second favourite option, but it&#8217;s not quite as elegant as the DHCP method as I don&#8217;t want to have this entry set across my whole network, rather than just the specific VLAN that I have my management interfaces for my UniFi hardware.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I know I you can set VLAN specific DNS responses, but this is really overkill for my home lab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Final option and my preferred setup is adding the option to DHCP as it is neatly only configured in my management VLAN, and provides a small amount of security (by obscurity) for the controller (alongside appropriate firewall rules implemented on PFSense). <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-heading\">Instructions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Log into your PFSense management interface, and head to &#8220;Services&#8221; on the top menu, then select &#8220;DHCP Server&#8221;. (No, I&#8217;m not using IPv6, let&#8217;s save that discussion for another time)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Option Number: 43<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type: String<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Value needs to be the IP address of your controller in HEX with &#8220;01:04:&#8221; preceeding it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s work through an example; If the IP address for your controller was 192.168.1.150, you&#8217;d get the HEX result of C0A80196.
